Stain Removal 101

Both my husband and I struggle with
spilling things...It runs in the family.

This makes me smile...Boys will
be boys to the fullest:) so I am prepared
lots of stains.
 Thoughts on Stains:
So a couple of months ago my sister and I were talking about all the joys of motherhood. Her on the side of being a mom and me, waiting with anticipation for the day our little boy, Isaac would enter the world. That day her daughter, my niece, had had a major blow out in her new dress her mom had made for her. Needless to say she stained her dress and her mom's nice shirt as well. We got talking about stains and how it would be nice to have a forum that you could just look up or look at on the wall that told you how to treat each stain. We were laughing at how hard it is to remember which stains need hot water and which need cold and so on.
Before I even had a child, I was
battling my husband's stains...
Our child is doomed!
Now that Isaac has entered the world, I am on a pursuit of finding all the solutions I can for stains...because we all know that little boys tend to find many ways to stain their clothes in their exuberance to explore the world around them. I would rather have a imaginative exuberant little boy coming with stains on his clothes than a clean boy. As if clean and boy can ever go together!
So I have looked on the web and put together a list...a rather long list of all the different stains(as much as I can think of) and how to treat each stain. (if you all think of any other stains that are not on this list, feel free and comment so that I can add that stain and its removal technic to the list.) I also have not tried every stain removal technic yet. So if one does not work...feel free and let me know so I can take it off the list:)

Washing secrets 101: How to get out stains in clothing:
Basics to know:
Do not apply direct force to the stain, dab or soak indirectly instead of using fingers or cloth to scrub
Soak stain immediately with water using a paper towel or something like it
When garment is removed resoak and apply absorbant(salt, cornstarch, talcum  powder) soak for 10-15 min
Lay garment down on a paper towel. This gives something for the stain to absorb into. Let the garment lay face down on the paper towel for a hour or so.
Give the garment a final rinse and than wash it.

Cloth diapers:
Wash once in cold water.
Wash once in warm or hot water with no more than 1/4 cup of Cloth Diaper Detergent. There is an option to occasionally use 1/4 cup of bleach in this cycle. If you chose to do this, we recommend you do it minimally as bleach breaks down fibers in fabrics as it cleanses and disinfects.
Add an extra rinse to remove all traces of detergent.
Tumble dry on medium setting or hang to dry.

Getting out  different types of Stains:

Baby poop blow out:
Cold water rinse, then wash with (I use 1/4 detergent) in warm or hot water, hang to dry any stained clothes/diapers in the sun and when I get home from work, the stains are all gone!

Dawn dish soap (original Blue color)  It gets the grease out, and I found that baby poop always left a greasy residue, but Dawn always got the stain out.  I bought a small bottle and have it sitting on a shelf above my daughter hamper,  When there is a stain of any sort, I put some Dawn on it right away then toss it in the hamper!  Some stains I scrub before I wash them.  But Dawn has worked on set in grease stains I have had on my clothes.  I'm even taking some on vacation with me next week just incase I spill something!  Love it!  And it's cheap and lasts forever!  Good luck.

Baby food stains:

Often times a liquid detergent will help in removing the baby food stain. Simply put the detergent directly on the stain and let it sit. The worse the stain is, the longer you will want to leave the detergent on. After the detergent has set a while on the stain, rub the detergent into the stain. Afterwards, rinse the garment completely. If the stain is completely gone, you can then launder it like normal.

Another method you can try for removing baby food stains is to lather the stain with shaving cream. You can put the shaving cream directly on the stain and let it soak for approximately 30-60 minutes. You will want to make sure that you use foamy shaving cream instead of the gel shaving cream. After the shaving cream has set for a while, rub the stained area and then rinse. If the stain is completely gone, you can then wash the clothing like normal. If the stain is still there, you can repeat the above steps in order to completely remove the stain.

Hydrogen peroxide and water can be mixed together to help remove baby food stains. Use 50 percent water and 50 percent hydrogen peroxide. Spray the mixture on the stain and let it stand for approximately 30 minutes. You will then want to rinse the stain with a mixture of 50 percent water and 50 percent vinegar. After the garment is completely rinsed, you can then launder as normal.

Oxiclean with warm water and a little detergent. soak over night

Lemon juice and 5-10 min in the sun will help remove stain. Do not leave on too long for the acid will start to erode the fabric

Blueberry Stains:

Step 1: Scrape off any excess blueberry from the fabric.

Step 2: Run the fabric, inside out, under the cold water to flush out as much of the blueberry juice as possible.

Step 3: Apply liquid laundry detergent to the stained area and let it soak in cold water for 15-30 minutes.

Step 4: Rinse with cold water.

Step 5: If no visible spots remains, wash as normal with either oxygen bleach or chlorine bleach if safe for the fabric. If not, proceed to Step 6.

Step 6: Apply hydrogen peroxide (or oxygen bleach in paste form) to the blueberry stain, if safe for the fabric. Let sit for a few minutes and then rinse well. Then, follow Step 5 above.

Hint: Make sure the stain is gone after washing, but before you place in the dryer or you may set the stain. Repeat if necessary.

Strawberry stain:
Flush stain with cool water
Mix one tablespoon of white vinegar with 1/2 teaspoon of liquid detergent with one quart of cold water. Let soak for 15 min.
Rinse with water
If stain remains sponge on rubbing alcohol and thoroughly rinse
Launder using chlorine bleach if safe for fabric.

Tomato based stain:
Scrape off excess sauce with butter knife
Dab detergent on stain and rinse in cold water from underneath stain so as to not push the stain deeper.
Launder garment normally.

Grass stains:

When trying to eliminate grass stains, remember not to ever use ammonia, degreaser or alkaline detergents because they are known to permanently set the stain.
Tide Liquid or Powder Detergent

If you utilize a liquid or powder detergent then you should use one that also contains enzymes and the proven grass stain killer, bleach.

A great choice would be Tide Powder with bleach. Tide not only contains unique cleaning solvents but combines them with bleach and special enzymes that make them true grass stain fighters.

To really make this method work;

Pour the detergent directly on the grass stain.
Massage the detergent in the stain.
Let the detergent sit for about 10-15 minutes.
Wash the item as normal.
If the stain isn’t immediately banished, you can repeat the entire process until the grass stain is history.

Rubbing Alcohol

Rubbing alcohol is a solvent and is very good at helping to dislodge the green pigment from the grass.

Take a sponge and wet the grass stain with isopropyl rubbing alcohol.
Let it air dry.
Rinse it again with cool water
Work in some liquid detergent into the stained area.
Rinse with cold water.
Let it air dry and then wash the item as you normally would.
This should get rid of the grass stain.

Plain White Vinegar

Pre-treat the grass stain with warm water and plain white vinegar (no fruit vinegar) or water and rubbing alcohol.

You can then rub the mixture directly into the stain and then wash it as you normally would. This mixture is known to get out the stain.

Bleach with Hydrogen Peroxide

This mix of bleach with hydrogen peroxide makes an incredible grass stain remover. Only use this on light clothing as the bleach can remove fabric color too.

To use this method;

Mix 1/4 cup bleach, 1/4 cup peroxide and 3/4 cups cold water.
Place it directly on the stained area and massage in gently
Let it sit for 30-60 minutes
Rinse it thoroughly
Wash the item as normal

Biz Detergent

Take a huge bowl of water and place it in a pan. Heat the water until boiling. Then, carefully add 1 cup of Biz laundry additive to the water while being careful not to burn yourself. (The water is very hot)

Stir the mixture until the Biz is completely dissolved.
Once the Biz is dissolved, you should take the mixture off the hot stove.
Take your grass stained clothes and put them into the pot for about an hour.
Let the clothes completely cool.
Once they are completely cool, you should take the items out of the pot and then wash them in the washing machine as usual.
This method should completely remove the grass stains.

Molasses or Karo Syrup

Take a few drops of Molasses or Karo syrup and put it directly on the grass stained area.

Really rub it into the fabric and let it sit for a few minutes. Afterwards, you should wash the item as you normally would. This will make sure that you get that grass stain out!

Banana Oil

Amyl acetate is another name for banana oil and it is sold in drug stores. It is great for removing the chlorophyll in grass stains.

To use it;

Apply it directly to the grass stain.
Rub gently.
Rinse with hot water.
If the stain remains, mix;

1 cup of cold water.
2 tablespoons of a mild detergent.
2 tablespoons of ammonia.
Apply this to the grass stain and rub gently. This combination should completely zap out the stain.

Dry Clean Only

If an item is specifically labeled as a dry clean only product then there isn’t anything that you can do except take it immediately to the dry cleaners. They will then treat and dry clean the stain away.

Commercial Grass Stain Removal Products

There are several commercial products that you can use as well. Some popular ones are Shout Liquid, Trigger or Gel.

To use this method;

Place the product directly on the stain.
Wait 1-5 minutes.
Wash it with detergent in the warmest water recommended on the garment label.
If the stain remains, you should repeat treatment.
You can also use Motsenburger Lift-Off Stain Removal, which is a biodegradable and water-based product that is known for its stain removal properties, including grass stains.

To use it;

Simply place it directly on the grass stain
Wait 10-15 minutes
Wash the item as you normally would wash it.

Lastly, you can try Goo Gone spray Gel, an organic and nontoxic spray that is also known for eliminating grass stains.

To use it;

Simply spray it on the grass stain.
Wait 15 minutes.
Wash the item as normal.
In conclusion, you can remove grass stains out of your washable fabrics by first understanding what causes these stains then using the biz removal mixture, bleach with hydrogen peroxide, digestive enzymes, alcohol and water rinse, and detergent with bleach, commercial products, and amyl acetate to get the stain out.

Mildew smelling laundry:
Vinegar/lemon juice: add into the load of laundry to get rid of the smell

Grease stains:
Treat with warm water
Soak with a heavy duty Detergent . put right on stain, let sit for 30-40 min
For stubborn grease stains, use mineral spirits. Only use on tough fabrics

Mud and dirt stains:
Soak and agitate in Luke warm water to remove as much as possible.
Apply detergent to remaining stains and let sit for 20-30 min.
Rinse and repeat if necessary.
Launder normally.

Cooking oil or butter:
Treat immediately with lukewarm water.
Immerse with warm water and detergent. To remove, gently dab stain with detergent and lay face down on a paper towel.

Coffee and tea stains:
Vinegar/Lemon juice: the acid is great at removing the stain. Do not use on wool.
Soak immediately in warm water.
Dab stain with vinegar diluted with water or with detergent.
Wash in the hottest water the fabric can handle.

Blood stain and armpit stains and sweat:
Salt: can be applied to top to wetted stain to give something for the chemicals to soak into.
For sweat stains:
Wash in hot water with detergent.
If stain persists, soak in warm water and let stain with a sprinkling of salt.
Washable Fibers
Follow these steps to remove blood stains from Acrylic, Fabric, Cotton, Linen, Nylon, Olefin, Polyester, or Spandex:
Fresh blood stains can usually be removed by a thorough laundering in cold water. Soak for 10-15 min
If any stain remains, soak it in a solution of 1 quart warm water, 1/2 teaspoon dishwashing or liquid laundry detergent, and 1 tablespoon ammonia for 15 minutes.
Tamp (the method of bringing a brush down with light strokes on stained durable fabrics and materials) or scrape (the method of using a scraping tool to gently lift off excess solid or caked-on stains), blotting occasionally with an absorbent pad.
Continue as long as any stain is being removed. Rinse well with water, making sure to remove all traces of the ammonia.
Then dry or launder.

Ink Removal Instructions

Dab rubbing alcohol onto the ink.
Allow a couple of minutes for the alcohol to penetrate the surface and react with the ink.
Blot the ink stain using layers of white paper towels or a cloth that has been dampened in either alcohol or water.
If the alcohol is ineffective, try using foaming shaving cream.
If the shaving cream doesn't work, hairspray usually will remove ink, but it should only be used as a last resort because hairspray damages some surfaces and fabrics.
Non-flammable dry cleaning fluid may remove certain inks. If you use dry cleaning fluid to remove a stain, rinse the area with water afterwards.
Gel ink pens use an ink that is made to be permanent. Alcohol will not remove gel ink, nor will acid. Sometimes it is possible to wear away gel ink using an eraser.

The Thoughts of a Pregnant Mommy

Today is a day of reflection. I woke up this morning and I realized this is the day I married my husband two years ago! Don't worry I didn't forget the day...and yes I do have a card waiting to give him:) If I think back to all that God has done over these last two years, I become overwhelmed. We have been so blessed!
My sister-in-law, Emily, posted a blog on what God is teaching her, and it truly struck home with me. I wanted to take a few minutes and remember what God has done for me and Tyler and share some of the things that God has been teaching me through this journey to motherhood.
I never could have imagined my life as it is! Seven and a half months pregnant, married to the most amazing husband, owning the silliest fun dog ever...I wouldn't trade any of it. I will say that being pregnant isn't easy, but I do know and wait in anticipation for the reward that comes at the end:)
I think that is one of the biggest things that God has been teaching me right now. Children are a blessing, a beautiful awesome gift from God. Lately as I have talked with people about having a child, I  often have only heard negative comments in return.
"Oh, you just wait until..." Fill in the blank.
There have been a few godly people though, who have come up to me and have simply smiled and have said quietly,
"Just wait to be blessed!"
"Just wait for God to show you more about yourself and your relationship to Him."
Those are the people that my ears perk up to. I want to be around them. I want to hear what they have to say. For them, yes there was hard days...but they chose to focus in hind sight on the blessings that came from having their children.
Looking at our world today, the sad truth is that many believe having children is a nascence, something to be avoided as long as possible. When the time finally arrives, they are continued to be thought of as a nascence...the different stages are dreaded...their lifestyles are forever changed...they will never have "fun" like they did before kids.
I can't tell you how hard it is some times not to fall into this mind set, to think that my life is never going to be the same in a bad way. Watching my now big belly move around as our child tries to get comfortable, I am continually brought back to the amazing truth. God blessed us with this child. God allowed my body to work how he designed it to. When he created Eve, when he was all done, he said it was very good! This little life inside me is a good and beautiful thing!
I know all you moms are probably thinking in the back of your head, "Oh just you wait until you have to get up at 2 am in the morning to feed your newborn! Just you wait..."
God has really been convicting me about my heart on those very matters. I don't know if any of my fellow pregnant friends ever used the excuse:
"I am hormonal right now(therefore I don't have to be responsible for my actions or words right now...I can be grumpy or say unkind things...all because I have these crazy hormones running through me!) I know I have been gilty of that crutch more than once. (strongly convicted on that by the way)
One Sunday a week or so ago, I woke up feeling pretty stiff. I actually felt like a train had run me over several times. (not a good way to start the day) I was brushing my teeth and I could feel that grumpy monster that seems to creep up on me almost every Sunday start to rear his ugly head into my thoughts. I tried praying and quoting scripture to myself, but I really wasn't relying on God. I was trying to do it in my own strength. I would make two steps out of the pit of grumpiness and than fall right back in.
Over the last month, I have been starting to meet with a lady from my church, and she had been challenging me to memorize scripture and than looking for ways that it applies to our every day lives, seeking heart change instead of just head knowledge. I had been memorizing John 15:4-6 about abiding in Jesus. I was there in front of the mirror trying to battle my sin, when the end of verse 5 popped into my head,
"...apart from me, you can do nothing."
So I started trying harder to abide in Jesus and thinking of the scripture that I had been memorizing and praying quietly. Again I heard the end of verse 5 pop into my head, this time more insistent...
"...apart from me, YOU can do nothing."
Than it hit me...I can't fight this sin on my own, not even for a second I can't. Only Christ can. A part of abiding in him is choosing to let go of any control we think we have and allowing God to transform our heart. Needless to say, my perspective on memorization has started to take a new outlook.
Now that I know that I have the ability to choose my attitude and actions through Christ, shouldn't that  give me hope in Christ that he will change my heart and my thoughts toward those early morning feedings and millions of diaper changes? I am praying for this often! I pray that he will prepare my heart for the selflessness that will need to come from taking care of my little one and serving my husband. I pray for a heart of joy on the discouraging days of endless crying and runny noses and temper tantrums.
I am realizing that I will have to take one day at a time...maybe even one moment at a time.
Matthew 6:25-34

25“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your lifee ?
28“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."
I am so thankful for these words that Jesus taught! I am a worrier. Just ask my husband....lol...The poor guy is always reminding me about where my heart is at and for that I am thankful that I do not have a husband that struggles with worry as well. Talking to most moms, they don't even have their bags packed for a hospital...this girl has packed and repacked...and will probably pack again and again till everything is exactly at she wants it...This girl has the nursery ready to go...this girl is trying to figure out how to do life already with a baby minus the baby itself being there. I am an organizer and I am realizing that I can only be so prepared. Again it goes back to that John 15 verse 5. Apart from Christ, I can not do this. I can not be the mommy and wife that I need to be. I can't even minister to others in my range of influence with out Christ.
I am so encouraged by the hope that is founded in abiding in Christ. I don't have to worry. I know he has our little son held in his hands. He holds me in his hands. He holds the doctors and nurses in his hands who will help with the delivery. He has it all under control...and he can give me the peace that surpasses all understanding if I allow him to.
Well this momma has to get moving on the day...God is so good! Abide in Him, draw near to Him...and he will do amazing things in your heart and life!
Love
Jules

Nesting...and Resting...

I think it has been a very long time since I have last posted...Probably almost 6 months now...About how long it has been since I got pregnant:)
So What have we been up to all these 30 weeks? I would call it Nesting...and Resting...
I wanted to show you some of the projects I have tackled over my time of baby growth. Who knows maybe some of you will use what I post for your own babies some day:)
One of the first projects I worked on was a diaper bag holder. Here is the tutorial that I used for making it. http://sewbeautifulmag.blogspot.com/2011/02/shannons-elephant-diaper-stacker-with.html
The directions were not all there, but if you know how to sew it is pretty easy to put all the pieces together:) The picture on the right is what her's looked like when it was all done. So cute:) She used a hanger to hang hers, I used ties. I figured if it was my project I could do whatever I wanted to it:)

The Next project that I really wanted to tackle was some storage bins for the nursery. They are so expensive when you go to hobby lobby or target....besides I came to realize that I could make ones that matched my nursery for less any way:) I am so happy how they came out:) Here is the link for this bin tutorial.
http://www.sew4home.com/projects/storage-solutions/stylish-baby-nursery-collapsible-storage-baskets

So I didn't stop there in trying different kinds of bins. These were both made from diaper boxes. These were fun to make because I got to use old jeans and burlap to make them happen:) Here is the tutorial for them:
http://ourhamiltonhome.blogspot.com/2011/07/diy-bins-and-mud-room-lockers.html
Okay so this one was one of my favorites... Little baby toms...:) I couldn't help but melt when they were finished and I saw the final product. They will probably only fit the little guy at the very beginning, but the cuteness was so worth it! The lady also had a tutorial for toddler toms too....
Here is the tutorial for this one:
http://www.homemadetoast.com/2012/12/toms-inspired-baby-and-toddler-shoes.html?m=1

This is one of the things I look forward to using. It is a diaper bag diaper organizer. Basically put your diapers and wipes together in the bag and then put it in the diaper bag...a nice way not to loose the diapers or wipes at the bottom of the bag. I am all about organization, so this seemed like a fun easy project to do:) And I will say it is pretty cute too. Here is the tutorial for this one:
http://www.noodle-head.com/2010/05/diaper-pouch-tutorial.html

This next one, a swaddler, came out so adorable. I am in love with the bird print. Can't wait to start using it on our little guy:)
Here is the tutorial for this one:
http://aaronandmisha.com/2012/05/02/diy-baby-shower-gift-baby-swaddler/

Oh my goodness, this is one of my favorite pieces that I made. I made our little man his own baby quilt. I know it will be a while before he will use it, but it is so fun! There is lots of soft squares for him to feel and cuddle with. My goal(we will see if it actually works or not) is to make each of our children a simple quilt that will be their special quilt growing up.
Here is the pattern for this one:
http://www.allpeoplequilt.com/projects-ideas/baby-quilts/story-time_1.html

These pictures summarize a bunch of different things I worked on. I will start with the bumpers. I know some studies are showing that having bumpers is unsafe for the baby...I remain to be convinced. If you desire to try...go for it...convince me if you want. I like the way they look.
here is the tutorial for them:
http://www.sew4home.com/projects/pillows-cushions/stylish-baby-nursery-crib-bumpers-two-cool-fabs
The Dust ruffle was pretty easy to make...Here is the tutorial for that one:
http://www.sew4home.com/projects/bed-linens/stylish-baby-nursery-bloomin-dust-ruffle
The rugs were another fun project that really brought some fun color to the room. They are actually made using a hula hoop and old tee shirts of Tyler's and mine. This project is actually a really great one for older kids who like to do crafts:) I know I enjoyed it. Word of warning...it did take a while...Here is the tutorial for that one:
http://spoonful.com/crafts/hula-hoop-rug

These are some burp clothes. The ones I have made for my pregnant(now not pregnant) friends have said that they work really well. They are flannel on one side and fleece on the other.
Here is the tutorial for these: http://www.danamadeit.com/2012/04/celebrate-baby-tutorial-burp-cloth-gift-sets.html

The awesomeness continues with a little man suit I made out of one of Tyler's old shirts:) GO Red Socks:)
Here is the tutorial for this one: http://www.feathersflights.com/2012/04/baby-shortall-from-adult-t-shirt.html

One other project that I have worked on that I think will be really beneficial is this door latch cover...might be useful for quietly getting into the room with out the baby knowing it:) Here is the tutorial for that one:
 http://www.killerbdesigns.com/door-latch-cover-for-babys-room/
And last but not least....I made my own bobby pillow. If ya all have shopped in the baby world...everything is really expensive...This being one of them...I, however, did my research and found a lady online who made up her own pattern and had a tutorial:) I love making things for less! when you know it is something that will be needed, it is good to save a little bit here and there:)
Here is the tutorial for this one:
https://sites.google.com/site/sewityourself/

I know there are other projects I have worked on, but I can't think of them right now...Hope you find something that catches your eye and inspires you to sew either for a friend, or for yourself...:)
